Bel 990

There are a lot of sneakily positioned speed cameras in my area, and I also have to drive along the variable speed limit section of the M25 every day.  It’s very easy to drive past the camera without noticing what the speed limit is meant to be.  I decided a radar detector would be a good reminder to check the limit.

The Bel 990 International was given first place in the group test in EVO magazine (my favorite car mag).  As well as the usual K,X and Ka bands that most models detect, the 990 will detect Ku band radar.  This is used in MiniGatso cameras in the UK and is not detected by the US favorite - the Valentine 1.

I have found the 990 very useful on the M25.  Only about a third of the gantries are active at a time, and the 990 gives a warning far in advance - about 150 metres away.

On regular Gatso cameras you get a reasonable warning depending on the surrounding area.  Not normally less than 20m.  It’s enough to slow down if you’ve strayed over the limit a little.  Again, a lot of Gatsos are not active.

The only problem with the 990’s extreme sensitivity is that is will detect automatic doors, most freqently at filling stations.  The signal strength from a real speed camera is higher though, so it’s easy to tell if it’s serious.
