Short Shifter

As all the reviews will tell you, the gearchange on the standard S4 is pretty poor.  It’s too light, too sloppy and too long.  I found it reasonable to use until I drove the Audi TT, which has a lovely precise short throw shift

Everyone on AudiWorld had been raving about the UUC shortshifter, so I enquired whether one could be exported to the UK.  It could, and in an incredibly short time I had the kit.

The kit consists of the hinged bit of metal pictured on the right, some grease and an allen key.  It doesn’t look like much, but that bit of metal takes a long time to make!

Everyone says it’s easy to install, but a quick look at the required tools list told me I didn’t have any of it.  It was fitted by Scott at AmD in about 20 minutes, by torchlight in a dark garage (don’t ask).

On the way home the first thing I noticed was the change from first to second.  No longer did it feel like rowing a boat!  It is now short, precise and has a lovely weighty feel.

The good news is the kit should also fit the new RS4, which the magazines all say has a loose sloppy shift as well.

Update

As part of my recent upgrade-athon, I’ve had the new triple adjustable shifter fitted at 40%.  It feels great!  There doesn’t seem to be any more effort required than at 20%, although it can be pretty notchy when it’s cold.
